I remember my first duty station in the U. S Army it was Camp Casey, Korea it was a long way from New Jersey but it was an awesome place. It was a special place because I never been overseas and this was the first time that I actually worked with foreign troops as mechanized infantry. Korea had a night-life was great. But the best aspects of being there was the ability to have your clothes tailored. So, I had several suits and pants made for me and some coats of which one still stands out and that was the leather jacket I had made for me. I choose the thickest, strongest leather, the zipper and even gave him my design and this tailor created a work of art.

I was able to go out and ride on December 1 it was another cold day here in Minot North Dakota. I began with the full intentions of running an errand to a store in Minot and come home so that I could work on the online business. I mean, my online business will fix itself or grow into a wealthy website by itself. I now begin donning on all the winter gear and apparel which usually lasts about 20 minutes in duration. Walked into the garage and started my 2016 Indian Scout Sixty in Pearl white and was off on the motorcycle cruise. I drove out to the main road where I made a left turn in front of the PX/Commissary. This has got to be the worst street to turn left on, there is always traffic depending on the time of day, but today it so bad and I made that left.
Driving Off Post
Drove to the light by the restaurant and waited for the light to turn green, I then drove to the second light and made a right turn and drove all the way down to the stop sign where I made a left turn. This interesting street is one where as you ride you can notice the big Air Force transport planes on the right and some building on the left. It is kinda cool to see all that firepower just waiting for something to happen somewhere in the world. I slowed down to 15 MPH to pass the guard shack at the gate and then up to 35 MPH. This motorcycle cruise December plains ride going to be an errand run, go to the store pick up what you need and get back home.
Arrived at The Store
Well, I arrived at the store bought what I needed to buy and was back on 83 heading north. Rolled-on the throttle and with any luck be back home in about 20 minutes. Man, this sounded good in my head but when the heart wants to ride the head reprograms your destination and the heart wins. This is not good I have 70 miles on the odometer already and it usually goes to 135 before the fuel light comes on, what to do?
Motorcycle Cruise Nirvana
So I ride past the front gate and say to myself,”I can go to 100 on the odometer and everything will be just fine”, rolled-on the throttle to 75 MPH and now cruising the Dakota plains. It has become a motorcycle cruise rolling down 83N heading towards the Canadian border. As I notice the surrounding scenery a feeling of peace with myself, no worries, just me and the open highway. I am at one with the iron horse.
The cold wind on the thighs, arms and hands
The road beneath me, every bump and crack
Power of the motor and the bike wanting me to give her more gas
Smell of everything around me
I felt like nothing else matters and the freedom just washes over me
I look down at the odometer and realize that I am at 115 miles, time to turn around, but first some pictures of the beautiful scenery here in North Dakota.
After the break, it is time to get back on this beast and ride on back to the homestead. I do love this part of the ride after a break the feeling of getting back on the bike and riding off is spectacular! Love this so much that I will take a break on a shorter rides just so that I can get this feeling once more. It is hard to explain this if you do not ride so start riding because this one sensation is only the beginning when it comes to motorcycle riding. On the way back the fuel light comes on at 124 can you believe, she usually gets 135 but not today and that is just fine because soon I will be back on post getting fuel at the gas station.
Yea!, I do believe it is over, I ride back sad, knowing that this wonderful experience will soon come to an end and soon I will be able to go on another adventure. Yes, adventure I said, because every time I get on this bike it is like no other ride at any other amusement park and that includes six flags. This exhilarating feeling that you experience when all the elements come smashing into you, this living, breathing feeling of you, the bike and the road, riding into unforeseen adventures is wonderful. This is the Yoga for motorcycle riders that administered as much as possible depending on the climate that you are in. So this was the December 1 motorcycle cruise ride and it was fantastic, the wind blowing at 5 MPH and the temperature was 30 degrees and it felt like 20 degrees.

So this last weekend the family and I finally decided to put up the Christmas decorations. I unpacked all the decorations and set them all down in the living room. This I did so everyone would know that yes, daddy is serious about setting up all Christmas decorations. I got everyone up around 1130 another late Friday night watching movies almost all night. Then decided to go out and purchase a Christmas tree so after getting the family fed we began our search for the Christmas tree!
Easy right, just hope in the car and go down to the tree farm and walk around until you find the perfect tree and cut it down, dragged it out and put it on the roof of the jeep and presto all done.
Well, easy when we lived in New Jersey where there was about 4 or 5 Christmas tree farms to choose from just in that state, not including what was available in Pennsylvania.
But now, here in Minot AFB that is not simple anymore. Did you know that North Dakota has no place where you can go and cut down your own tree. There is no place where you can go and just cut down that special tree for Christmas. This simple act of cutting down your own tree hit home for us this year, we find it to be a family tradition cutting your own tree down and bringing it home. I did miss that this year and in another year and a half we will be south of this place, and once again cut our own tree down.
Anyhow we did manage to find a TC Nursery of Burlington N. D by our house and paid it a visit, it was either this place or Home Depot and the trees at Home Depot looked sad displayed outside. So we choose this place because the people were friendly and knowledgeable on the types of trees they had in stock. They knew the type of trees and which ones would give off the best fragrances for your home. We could not cut down our own tree this year but TC Nursery made everything better for us. And they helped us to find the perfect tree and they even tied it on the roof for us, talk about customer service what a great attitude. I told my wife that next year we would definitely return to the same place, then loaded the family and off we went to put the tree up.

Today, I was finally able to do some winter motorcycle riding where I live. The weather cold and below 0 degrees and now it has finally went back to normal here in Minot North Dakota. So I began my motorcycle winter riding gear ritual;
Now this ritual for riding changes depending on the temperature that you plan on riding in, today the temperature was 40 degrees and with the wind it felt like 32 degrees. A nice temperature for this time of year in North Dakota. After getting all of my gear on I started my Indian Motorcycle and was ready for some winter motorcycle riding. I closed the garage and made the usual turns onto the main street which led me to the front gate of the post. I arrived at the Stop sign by the entrance of the military post and made a left turn onto Highway 83 riding north. Funny because, if I continue on 83N for approximately 45 minutes I will be at the Canadian Border and can cross over to a whole new country with all new adventures.
But today I rode along the road and the wind around 15 MPH and the passing trucks did not help as they passed me by. Not too many of cars today I guess people still working. Yea, I remember how that felt to be a worker but now that retired from the military I ride during the day and it is wonderful. As I rode I noticed the left over snow and the openness of this great state, everywhere you look you can see for miles and miles, when you ride in North Dakota you notice everything as you ride because of how vast it is. But when you see something cool then you know that the ride was definitely worth it.
Up about 10 miles on 83N I see a sign on the right for Lake Darling 12 miles so I make a left and ride on. I notice the farms and corn fields on either side as the wind is calm but you still feel the chill as you ride. As you get closer to the lake located in the Upper Souris National Wildlife Refuge, you begin to see the lake coming into view on the right and it is beautiful.Upon arriving I can see that the lake still has some ice sitting over the surface the temperatures are not warm enough to melt that ice. And, all of this I see while I ride my motorcycle, sure I could drive my car and seen the same scenery but I would not earn it like I just did from the environment. I arrive and stop to take in the view and snap some pictures of this great ride. After some time of taking in the views, temperature and its peaceful moment I start the bike and head back.
Riding back I see one car in the opposite lane in all the 12 miles heading back, this place is awesome for riding a motorcycle. There are never that many cars on the road, you can be on your motorcycle going 75 MPH and never catch up to the car in front of you due to the roads bing so long. So I try to keep her under 70MPH and take in as much scenery as I can. And I do, I see more left over snow, some cows and more corn fields. I finally reach Route 83 and turn right and head south back to post doing 70-75MPH a few more cars but nothing significant on the way back.
I arrive, make a right and am back on post heading home knowing that soon this ride will be over. There will be more days this week and I will ride again even if the weather is 32 degrees or warmer. Although riding in much colder weather you do need to be careful of black ice, ice patches and the threat of snow while your riding. But do not let this deter you from winter motorcycle riding its an awesome adventure for anyone who wants to build more experience in their riding arsenal. I recommend winter riding to everyone because not everyone rides in the winter but they should.

Welcome to Winter, the time to put away the bike and feel the cold weather chilling your bones to the core.
Time to think about Halloween, Thanksgiving and yes Christmas it’s not time to unplug the bike from the battery tender, check the air in the tires, fill up the gas tank and go for a ride in the windy cold weather.
Is it really too cold to ride a motorcycle in the winter? I mean the snow, black ice, freezing rain, cold wind, freezing fingers, legs and no mater how many layers you wear you are still cold and miserable winter.
Some of you say hell yea, it’s too cold and I will wait for the spring when the weather is much nicer. Who needs to be in that temperature with a bike, that’s a lot of gear to wear do some winter motorcycle riding. I say I do, Yes, winter motorcycle riding is a wonderful experience it’s brisk the scenery is fantastic and you get to ride all year round.
I live in North Dakota and I ride in the winter so tell me, how cold is it where you’re at. The trick is to pick the really nice days, make sure the temperature is above freezing and don’t venture too far from home in case it starts snowing and you need to get home.
The temperature should not be a big factor in winter riding I mean you are riding on a motor that gets hot. Your legs will stay comfortably warm due to the heat being generated by the motor.
Yes 32 degrees Fahrenheit feels like 23 degrees when you are riding and sometimes colder it’s cold wind chill factor. But if you dress in layers like I do:
A thermal liner over my t-shirt and long john top and my leather jacket.
A liner under my leather motorcycle pants.
Wool socks under my heavy-duty motorcycle riding boots.
A freeze out head liner under the full face helmet.
Heated gloves that plug into the motorcycle.
I also put a windshield on my cruiser and this really helps out.
So, as you can see the weather doesn’t really affect me much after all these articles of clothing are put on. Once I am set I ride slower for the first 10 minutes to warm up the tires and engine. Although I failed to mention you should warm up the engine at least 5 minutes before riding and add some engine stabilizer at every fill up it helps protect the engine.
What about the Bike?
Well what about the bike how will she react to winter motorcycle riding. All you need to do is take several precautions and take care of yourself for a safe enjoyable ride. You need to;
Check your fluid levels at least once a week, before your ride ideally.
Check your tire pressure before every ride, this one is very important and it should go without saying.
Check your mirrors, yes they could have shifted and you are bulkier now.
Disconnect the battery tender before riding.
If you park more than a week move the bike up or down a couple of feet every week to protect from tire flattening.
Take it easy the first couple of miles to warm the tires and engine to an optimum operating temperature. Then ride like you normally would when riding in the spring except now if you get really cold you stop for coffee or cocoa.
ATGATT=All the Gear All The Time but now you need to add cold weather gear to that equation. Truthfully, I used to get really cold fingers when riding but after I purchased plug in heated gloves I no longer worry about my hands. Yes, the gloves make the ride because if your head and fingers are warm you can ride a long time in the winter. But you might consider the following:
Some kind of Balaclava or Freeze out head protector.
Thermal top and bottoms thick and can fit under your motorcycle leathers.
Nice thick wool socks under some nice leather riding boots.
A motorcycle safety vest or airbag vest.
2-3 layers of insulated clothing under your thick leather jacket.
A neck warmer if not wearing a Balaclava.
An extra pair of riding gloves in the saddlebags in case it gets warmer.
A tire inflation pump in the saddlebags just in case.
I also recommend putting in, “Ride-On” for prevention of flat tires they will at least get you home after a puncture.
Full Face helmet it’s just too cold for any other type of helmet.
Let’s Go For A Ride
So now you finally got everything on that you need for the ride and you look like the Michelin man, hey no one said it was going to look nice but you will be warm and safe. At this point you ride out onto the open rode nice and warm, if you are not warm you add more clothing next time. I mean this is not an exact science it’s all about trial and error and what works for you because what works for me won’t exactly work for you or anyone else. Also, when you start riding there are some things you should keep in mind:
Remember the gloves are bulkier so you have less feeling in your hands so you need to adapt to the throttle.
At a stop sign or a traffic light remember your legs are bulkier so be careful stepping down.
When riding look for ice and snow on the road surface and avoid if at all possible.
If you run over snow or ice come off the throttle and don’t slam on the brakes.
Give yourself more space to slow down in case of black ice unseen.
Riding in the winter is about enjoying the ride.
Do not speed and go, throttle easy and steady.
Enjoy the weather you are part of the few who have made the transition to yearly riding in the snow states.
Back Home, Sipping some Hot Chocolate
Finally back home the ride is over a little sad and a little happier because you made the ride enjoyable and it might have been one of your better winter ride. There is nothing like coming home after an awesome winter motorcycle ride and taking a warm bath or drinking a nice hot chocolate. You feel like you have accomplished a great deal, the weather was brisk but the scenery was fantastic. You are a part of the few who refuse to store their motorcycle for the winter. The, “I will ride the winter months no matter what”, riders. I know that if you take my advice and decide to ride in the winter you will not regret it even if you ride for only 30 minutes it will be worth it.
The human body is beautiful and its designed to move and work for a lifetime. The body will allow you to move through space and accomplish everything needed to live a normal daily life. But as you age you move less and less, this has a direct correlation to the amount of exercise you accomplish daily in your life.
As you age so does the rest of your body.
The older we get the more pain we experience.
With more pain comes more rest which gives us more body fat.
So how do you stop the cycle of pain and body aches and pain, well you use nutrition, the components of fitness and exercise. Sounds simple because it is
simple, the reason we get confused is that of all the misinformation online and how to stay fit as you age requires some work but not much.
I can not begin to count the number of diets on television and online. There are high protein, low carbs diet, high carbs low protein, Atkins diet, Mediterranean diet, Weight Watchers, Keto diets, etc. Do all of these diets work yes but;
Some require lots of work and time.
A couple of them require you to buy their foods.
You have to prepare meals in advance.
So you spend time buying them and then you spend time making them and finally you eat them.
Do I eat 3X a day or 6x a day
When do I eat it
How do I eat it
How many times
Do I drink shakes
The list goes on and on, do any of these people have real jobs with real families. I mean, I all ready cook dinner for my family and now you want me to also cook separate meals for me. Yea! right, twice the effort and twice the time and I have to go to work tomorrow. Then they say, go shopping and prepare all your meals on the weekend when you have more time. Sure this sounds great after such a lovely work week I can come home and do more work!
Does any of this sound familiar to you? well many diets work and you will lose the weight but;
It is not sustainable in the long run.
It is not cost effective.
The weight will come back after you stop using the diet.
So what is the answer, I do not know if there is a right answer to such a complex question because the body likes to maintain weight. But, I will tell you what works for me intermittent fasting. And this is the fancy term for not eating, for me I pick an 8-hour window to eat which is from 10 am to 6 pm and the rest of the time I do not eat. This gives me 16 hours of fasting from 6 pm to 10 am the next morning and helps me fall into the ideal fasting hours that exist between 12-36 hours. Do this at least 5 days a week and I gaurantee you will lose fat and feel healthier.
So how do I do it?
Eat for 8 hours during the day mine is from 2pm through 10 pm
Only drink water, coffee no sugar.
You can drink diet drinks
Drink plenty of water at least 8 cups.
So will I lose weight?, I have and it steady losing 1-2 pounds a week and feeling less hungry the more I fast during the fasting periods. Your body adapts so consult your doctor to get started and keep eating what you love and exercising this all works.
Exercise Has Components?
As we grow older we get weaker and our bodies begin to break down because of inactivity and lack of exercise.
Our bodies are like engines, they require daily activities to function, a cars engine needs starting everyday and driven on the road. Like a car we also need to be run daily but unlike a car we need exercise and we achieve this through the 5 components of fitness listed below;
Muscular Strength– This is pure body power, like how much can you bench press 1 time.
Muscular Endurance– Being able to do a certain physical activity for a long time.
Cardiovascular Endurance– Doing something nonstop that elevates your heart rate while working the lungs for at least 20 minutes.
Flexibility–Your joints being able to move through a full range of motion.
BodyFat– Amount of fat mass as compared to your muscle mass, bones and organs.
Got it!, exercises has components now what;
Now create a program that will use all of these components and work for you.
See a doctor if you are over 40
You should be able to cover all of this in under 60 minutes.
Decrease your body fat by doing an aerobic activity for 20-30 minutes a day.
Increase your strength by doing 3 sets of 8-12 repetitions of a full body workout at least 3X a week, or 1 body part a day for Monday through Friday, (IE. Chest on Mondays, Back on Tuesday, Legs on Wednesday, Shoulders on Thursday and Arms on Friday.)
So as you can see it does not take much effort to stay fit as you age. I am over 50 years old and do a 60-minute workout Monday through Friday and rest on the weekends because the weekend belongs to my family. I know that this formula works for me and believe that it can work for you with a few changes. Just because you are older does not mean you give up. It means you have to get up and exercise do not let society dictate what you can and can not do. I mean you are in the best years of your life you have more wisdom and more money. So enjoy, use moderation and workout Monday through Friday it works. Buy the SoloFlex Muscle Machine, Bowflex 1090 Dumbbells and the Incline Trainer and you will be on your way to better health.
I remember when I first got my free high visibility yellow and black vest from the military motorcycle safety office. I remember because I did not know they were free and all you had to do was provide them with proof of the , M endorsement on your license. This was a great vest it had pockets and a place to store your ID card something important when living on-post and plan on leaving the post for a ride. I wore this vest for a while and then up graded to a Held protector vest. The new vest was and still is a fantastic investment but on the pricey side. I do believe that every rider should wear one whether they ride at night or during the day. It becomes a nuisance when you begin wearing it, but as you get use to it you think less about it. To wear or not to wear a Motorcycle Safety Vest is all up to you the rider it does however provide more visibility for you so the cars can see you and not hit you.
The sole purpose of wearing the motorcycle safety vest is for cars and people to see you on the road. I mean we put up with the vest being uncomfortable sometimes the added weight, added heat in the summer and a host of other scenarios. But why go through all the trouble of wearing one I mean even I sometimes wonder are they worth it. Is all the hassle of throwing that vest on over the jacket worth it. My answer is yes, believe me there are numerous studies that have found that wearing a high visibility vest decreases your chances of being hit by about 30%
Because of just sitting on a motorcycle whether it be on a sports’ bike or cruiser or just about any other style of motorcycle allows the car driver to see you even if a split-second sometimes; Which is all you need to get out of a critical situation. The highways and side roads of America have all drivers, some are safe some are not. let me explain. Most people get up and head out to work every morning with every intention of being as safe as they can.
In their mind they drive as safe when they are on the highway driving at 75MPH keeping up with the flow of traffic. And when they travel this fast and read and answer a text they say I just need to look for a few seconds. Drivers swing open doors, stop, swerve into your lane with no turn signal, talk on the phone and text. People are do not always use their best judgment they get stressed and upset sometimes while driving, and which leads to less attention when driving.
And here we come on our beautiful black cruisers with black leather jacket and chaps and a black helmet and gloves we look damn good traveling down the road. We look good but to drivers we become invisible who now fails to see you and slam! you just got hit. Was the driver at fault or was it the bikers fault?, who knows!, the biker paid for it with his body. Now, should you look like a Christmas tree riding down the road?, No I am not but I do believe that you can compromise and wear a vest. At least they will see you better out on the road and you can enjoy the ride. Be visible to all the other drivers and wear a motorcycle safety vest or an airbag vest!

The Held Airbag Vest Overview
Are you serious!, they make an airbag vest for motorcycle riders, this just sound too ridiculous to me. Well I am here to inform those who have not heard that there is at least one company out there that does sell high quality motorcycle airbag safety vests, the held airbag vest. This would be the upgrade in safety for those riders who would want to go a step further in body protection. It looks like a regular motorcycle safety vest but heavier and with a kick in performance. The Held vest comes in yellow or black and it has three clips in the front and a chord that comes down from the middle of the vest that
attaches to your motorcycle. How it works is you load a compressed air cartridge in the side pocket connected to a chord that attaches to your motorcycle. Then, when you decide you want to go riding you would just clip the lanyard to the motorcycle and off you go, arrive at your destination and unclip it. And, no worries if you forget to detach it the unit will not discharge because it takes 66 pounds of force to release it.
It will take about a week of riding with the vest to get accustomed to the procedure and become more protected while riding. And what happens when it does discharge, well if you do come flying off the bike for whatever reason the vest inflates in Millie seconds and now the front, your back, neck and spinal cord protected. The vest actually aligns your head forward and keeps your back straight and protected. Then it takes several minutes to deflate on its own.
The vest sells for $681.14 and yes, pricey but how much is it to spend a few nights at the emergency room lately. They are expensive, but they will reduce my risk of injury and they are worth it so much that I purchased a yellow one and have wore it for a year now. And yes they do work, It deployed once when I almost dropped the bike on a dirt road; I caught the bike but came off the bike fast and the vest deployed even faster. So I urge you to buy the held airbag vest this smart investment could prolong your life while riding on the road.

I learned how to ride my motorcycle at the Harley Davidson Riding Academy in Oct 2016 and decided to take a brand new road king for a test drive. I did the research and loved the design and figured what a better time to test drive it than on my birthday. So I went down to the same Harley dealer that I learned how to ride and asked if I could take the Road King for a test ride. The sales associate brought me into his office and after signing the release forms he rode the bike up to the front of the shop. He asked if I could do a couple of laps around the parking lot to ensure I could handle the bike. I complied and then waited for him while waiting I tilted the bike and almost dropped her on the ground. I got lucky because when this occurred he out getting his ride to accompany me on the test drive.
As we took off I followed him down the highway the engine on the road king was much stronger than the bike I owned and it took off fast and smooth. We turned off the highway into a side road and opened up the throttle and it was awesome, what a rush! This was the bike I needed or so I thought at the time it was fast, great handling and came in a beautiful black color. The ride went great and I told the associate when we returned I need to buy this motorcycle. He said sure and started on the details but then came on back down to reality knowing that I needed some more time to save, but thanks for the ride it was a great birthday present.
You Need to Buy Your Motorcycle
When I say I know what it like looking for months, weeks and hours at craigslist, cycle-trader, motorcycle dealers, used and new bikes. Frustrating when you finally get M endorsement and all you want to do is ride. But motorcycle dealers do not give out test drives. But there are always ways around everything and for motorcycle buyers you can always go to the dealers and check out their used inventory. These are great places to start the dealer will give you at least a year warranty and if you have any problems you can come back to the dealer for fixing. Most reputable dealers have a decent used motorcycle inventory of great beginner motorcycle. Now why am I so adamant about motorcycle dealers well I have had my problems shopping on craigslist and the private sellers and have friends who have bought a few motorcycle nightmares.
But remember to bring your motorcycle endorsement before you even think about test-driving. I recommend,”The Harley Davidson Motorcycle Riding Academy”, it has a great price and all the Harley dealers should offer it. They integrate it with,”The Motorcycle Safety Foundation” and this foundation is at the cutting edge when it comes to motorcycle safety. The course takes a beginner and in three days they know how to ride a motorcycle and earned their motorcycle endorsement. So, take the course the instructors are awesome and they are helpful and informative, it worked for me.
I have my Motorcycle Endorsement
I got my motorcycle endorsement and saved $2000 to $3000 which is a great starting point for a beginner or starter bike. And I do not know why people call it a beginner bike, its like you could not get a real bike so you purchased a starter bike. Listen, when you purchase your first bike be proud, it is the first motorcycle and a big accomplishment. If the surrounding people do not understand that then too bad because the brotherhood of motorcycle riders does and we will welcome you with open arms. My first bike was Royal Enfield GT 535I in red and it was awesome not because it was fast but because it was my first motorcycle. I remember riding around town and some people always had good comments about the bike. The Royal Enfield is the oldest motorcycle manufacturer; Thats right older than Indian and Harley and they outsell both of them yearly worldwide so never judge until you know the story.
Look and buy Your Motorcycle
When you finally begin looking to buy your motorcycle you should look at 500cc to 900cc depending on the size and what you can handle. Look at the riding you want to do, do your homework search google, craigslist, and cycle trader, research and more research find out about the engine, tires, and specs of the bike look at all the reviews and think about what you want. If you do decide to go the private seller route bring along a friend who knows how to fix motorcycles and have him look it over or ride it. Also, a friend will tell you the truth and when not to buy when you get all star eyed and say I just have to get this bike.
Start small and used and then save up for the bike of your dreams or at least a great down payment and great interest rate, what is great interest rate 0% APR and that is what I received when I bought my new Indian. Decide sports bike, cruiser, motocross, scooter whatever then go see them and sit on them; are the seats comfortable and will it be this comfortable when your riding for 2 hours. Is the weight of the bike good for you, go ahead and lean it to each side get a good feel for it, these are the questions you need to ask yourself when you buy your motorcycle.
Remember the first motorcycle sole purpose is to show you throttle control and great road habits. Along with those good habits always use ATGATT, (All the gear all the time), and I recommend an airbag vest for motorcycles from Helite but all covered at the motorcycle academy and could save your life. In summary as you progress in riding your motorcycle she will let you feel more of the road and you will know how she handles the obstacles on that road, eventually the both of you will become one entity riding down the road exploring the wonder and beauty of riding and this relationship will become stronger and last a lifetime.

Ever since 1902 when the first motorbike became a motorcycle, riders have wore motorcycle apparel and accessories. Sure back in the 1900s the riders wore Tweed suits and flat caps to protect themselves from the elements of the road. And as time went on they began wearing full length boots and gauntlet gloves inspired by the police and military of the time. By 1910 leather skull caps and aircraft spectacles were the fad of the day, these items offered more protection and prevented road injuries. Imagine riding a motorcycle in all sorts of weather with only your experience and achieved skill level to guide you in all your road adventures.
A nice leather jacket, great to keep you warm but you would have had to wait until 1928 when Irving Schott designed the first motorcycle leather jacket in NYC. This new leather jacket was all black leather and Mr. Schott named it the perfecto and it sure was for the time. By 1935 helmets became mandatory due to the actor T. E Lawrence died on a motorcycle accident that year and by 1960 the first full face helmet was made.
They were not as elaborate and safe as todays helmets but they were the start of keeping you safer. Today we have all different manufactures of helmets with all sorts of accessories and safety features and designs. As well as different types of pants weather they be jeans, chaps or racing pants they all offer the rider more protection. There are reflective vests, patterns, high tech material and fluorescent colors all made from the best materials and tested to perform in all elements on the open road. We live at a great time in history for the average motorcycle rider and his ever-changing motorcycle apparel and accessories.
Leather Motorcycle Jackets and Pants
Motorcycle jackets and motorcycle pants have a special place in my heart. I do love leather, I love the smell of it and the feel of it and how it makes you feel when you wear it. Even before I began riding my motorcycle I always loved leather jackets but when I saw people riding motorcycles wearing leather jackets and chaps this just looked awesome.
I do believe that a small part of me began riding as a direct result of wanting to put on a leather jacket and leather chaps and straddling a motorcycle to ride down the road. Motorcycle apparel and accessories was the term society would use to describe the clothes people should wear if riding a motorcycle from point A to point B. Well this is all fine for the rest of society but as a rider they are ;
My Leather pants or Chaps, my keep my legs warm and dry and free from road debris,
My anti-road rash friend who will save my skin by sacrificing his.
That which becomes a part of the riding experience.
The leathers that are as much a part of the bike as a part of me.
My salvation through rain, sun, wind and fall my riding leather!
My jacket, my keep me warm and dry, protector made from leather that will save me if I ever go down due to a cage not paying any attention or texting on the phone.
There are all kinds used according to the application intended. Classified into street gloves, off-road gloves, summer gloves, winter gloves, gauntlets/racing gloves, fingerless gloves and adventure/touring gloves. Why so many and why should you care, well try running as fast as you can on the concrete and dive forward to the ground your hands will attempt to catch your fall and you will end up with bloody hands.
Imagine traveling on a motorcycle at 55 or 65 MPH same involuntary reaction but with a devastating outcome. Now, wear gloves or do not wear gloves, do what you need to stay safe because you only get 1 pair of hands and they need to last a lifetime.
Now when looking for hand protection, motorcycle gloves come in all different categories for riding and designed to protect your fingers, knuckles, and wrists.
Some like half helmets some like full face helmets some like 3/4 helmets hell some do not even wear one. Wear one do not wear one it is up to you the amount of risk you will take. Not judging just informing you of the different types of motorcycle helmets within the motorcycle apparel and accessories. From most offered protection to least offered welcome the full face helmets which cover the top, back, and front of your head and have a chin bar.
They have ventilation on the top and front of the helmet and some even come with internal visors. The more expensive ones come with a pin-lock system and they do keep the fog out when riding in the cold. The second is the modular helmets these are popular with adventure/touring riders providing a flip top mechanism creating a convenient and versatile helmet for drinking coffee or reading a road map. Although, less safe than a full face they are popular.
Number three open face helmets or 3/4 helmets popular among cruiser and scooter riders these helmets are equal in strength as the full face but provide less coverage and some come with no face shields.
The fourth is the infamous half helmet or brain bucket by far the coolest of the bunch popular with cruiser and vintage riders. This is the most minimalist protection for the rider and the impact resistance is substandard but DOT approved and it beats not wearing one. Number five is the off-road helmets designed for off-road use with poor sound proofing but great ventilation. They have a sun peals, pronounced angular chin bars, lightweight and with googles.
And finally dual sport helmets these are a new breed of helmets. They are a cross between off-road and full face helmets that provide excellent ventilation and soundproofing. These helmets to not lift up at highway speeds a great benefit for the off-roader who needs to hit some highway roads before reaching the trails.
As you can see ever since 1902 people wore motorcycle apparel and accessories and looked good while riding their motorcycle. Some have worn leather jackets and leather chaps some only the jacket. The leather material is a natural fit for motorcycle riding its rugged, sturdy, and comfortable and also protects you in a slide. Some have worn full face helmets some half helmets and some no helmets but most still wear gloves due to the wind and road debris.
I learned a long time ago that motorcycle riding is all about how much risk you will take. I know that the longer you ride the more confidant you become and that is a good. But for me wearing all the gear all the time will save your skin and life. Because it is not about your driving skills so much as the skill of all the cagers out on the road. Wear your apparel if not for you for a loved one because we are all motorcycle brothers.
